A Closer Look At Assisted Reproductive Technology

Assisted Reproductive Technology or ART is basically a sort of umbrella term being given for different treatment procedures available to help a woman achieve pregnancy.

Speaking about Assisted Reproductive Technology, there are different treatments like IVF, ICSI, Virtification, IVM, and IUI. Each of these treatment procedures has their own set of procedures, positives, and negatives to consider. Here, we would be going through these in brief to have a basic understanding.

IVF

IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization. It is often regarded as the best type of Artificial Reproductive technologies available. The process involves the collection of eggs from the female and sperm from the male and placing them together in Petri Dish in a laboratory. An embryologist would then be observing the scenario closely to figure out whether any kind of fertilization is taking place or not. Accordingly, it could be figured out that whether the embryo would undergo cell division or not.  If the embryo is figured out of the highest quality, it would be inserted back into the uterus of the woman patient, anytime from 2nd day to 5th day of the fertilization process.

ICSI

ICSI or Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a certain type of artificial reproductive technology that is used for achieving fertilization in its normal form. This process is perfectly apt for those couples where the male is having a problem with fertility. It can be also effective for single mothers. In this process, a single sperm is being selected by the embryologist. The tail is removed and then injected into the egg of the woman. According to fertility forums, this procedure is invasive and is often not proposed unless conditions are too critical.

Vitrification

This method is often referred to as the fast freezing method because it involves freezing of eggs, embryos, and sperm. Earlier, the freezing of embryos and gametes are considered to be a highly risky procedure with a certain uncertainty associated with the success rate. However, vitrification procedure has changed the concept and has resulted in higher success rate. The thawing success rate is now over 90% in most of the fertility clinics. In this process, the cells are being frozen at a much quicker basis in comparison to the old methods.

IVM

IVM stands for In Vitro Maturation. In this process, immature eggs are being collected from a woman’s ovary during the unstimulated natural cycle. Then, these eggs are being matured in the laboratory. Then the process of ICSI is being performed to achieve fertilization. This procedure is a safe option since there is not the inclusion of any fertility drugs to achieve fertilization.

IUI

IUI or Intra-Uterine Insemination is often regarded as the simplest and easiest forms of Assisted Reproductive Technology. The process involves the collection of sperm and then preparing it into the lab to improve its fertility power. Then, it is being inserted into the uterus of the woman during the end of the ovulation period.
There is basically no specific definition of ART. It is basically a contrasting term to identify different procedures that help in the method of reproduction. Therefore, ART covers different types of fertility treatments and makes sure that a woman is not deprived of motherhood.
